CONSTRUCTION OF SWEET'S HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT CENTRE

SOEST, The Netherlands helped us in completing the construction of a floor above the existing Human Resource Development Centre. By this extension, poor women, widows and adolescent girls are trained in tailoring skills. Also evening coaching classes are conducted for the children daily. In mere future, this building will be used for training youth to prepare themselves for competitive examinations.

Income Generation Programme (IGP)

Right Sharing of World Resources (RSWR), USA has supported the women living with HIV / AIDS and poor young widows of Irulas and dalit communities. Through this project, SWEET has helped the women living with HIV / AIDS and poor young widows of Irulas and dalit communities, poor women to start their own business such as vegetable shop, rice flour, and tailoring, petty shops and flower vending.

Stichting Overal, The Netherlands supported in providing seed money for women living with HIV / AIDS, migrating and bonded labour and poor young widows of Irulas and dalit communities. The disadvantaged women, who are really interested in small vending have been selected by the respective groups and provided training on the promotion of skills in entrepreneurship, business management, accounting and customer relationship. The seed money was given to purchase a milk cow, to buy a sewing machine and to start petty shops and vegetable shops. Melania Development Cooperation, The Netherlands supported us in providing goats to HIV / AIDS women and young widows.

Goat Rearing Project

The Melania Foundation, Netherlands supported a project for goat rearing in 2015-2016. The project supported 20 widow women and HIV Positive women. Seed Money has been provided for the purchase of two goats to per women of the project. The project beneficiary women are successfully running this project and helped the new beneficiaries to involve in this project by handing over one lamb. At present totally 27 women are benefitting through this project and become bread winners of their families.

Vocational training

Stitching Derde Weeld Groep Soest, THE NEDERLANDS supported a project named Permanent source of career development of poor tribal, widows and HIV / AIDS victims’ women through stitching their life by stitch work. Through this training we trained 30 poor disadvantaged women.

Achievements

The following are the changes and achievements in the women life,

  • Rise in level of family income.
  • Increase in economic status of the community
  • Reduced temporary migration.
  • Education of their child by this income

Further, the tailoring project has been supported for additional 30 women of Pombur village, Vanur Block by Nehru Yuva Kendra, Government of India. They provided three months course for the women with hand embroidery training.

Education Programs

Special Coaching For Drop Out Children

Career guidance and special coaching provided to the rural youth and school dropouts. There are many opportunities are available for these youth and drop out to develop their skills in various technical and diploma educational courses. These trainings and coaching sessions have helped them to equip their knowledge and skills in search in of part time training courses and job opportunities at nearby towns and district head quarters. During the last two years we have trained 125 young boys and girls and out of them more than 50% got good opportunities for their future.

Preparation for Competitive Examinations for Job opportunity in state & Central Government & Private sectors:

Educational counselling for the students attending public examinations have been provided to 2500 students studying in the Government schools and aided schools. Since the 10th standard examination is the turning point of their academic education, SWEET has organised many counselling and guidance program for the poor students in schools and also in our working villages. Such trainings have been organized during the months from December to May. The trainings for the preparation of competitive examinations have been also conducted by SWEET and more than 500 students and youth have been benefited through tease trainings. Job placement trainings with soft skills, presentation skills, maintaining customer relationship and retail promotion also conducted for the youth boys and girls. These trainings have been helped the youth to get their job in suitable places like small companies, institutions and industrial sectors.

Social Awareness

Leadership and Communication

Trainings on leadership and communication has been organized to women and youth in the rural villages. The leaders and representatives of women Self Help Groups (SHGs) and youth groups have been equipped their skills in leadership and communication. The need for the soft skills, interpersonal communication and conversation skills were taught. These skills have very much helped them for better interactions with officials and civic body members in getting their benefits from Government departments and sectors for improving the basic facilities of their villages.

Human Rights Education

Most of the rural people are living without any proper basic facilities such as safe drinking water, street lights, roads and toilet facilities. The conditions of housing and accessibility of basic amenities, toilet facilities and discharge of garbage from the environment have worsened. Most of the rural population is unorganized laborers working as daily wagers in agriculture and also its related works. The people do not have the opportunity to collaborate and therefore they have no information or details about the structures and functioning of the civic bodies. But, through our interventions and human rights education, the women of Self Help Groups, youth groups and village committees are now able to approach the officials and civic body members to tap the resources from government authorities like Block Development Office (BDO), Taluk office, office of the Public Distribution System (PDS), water board and electricity board.

Legal Awareness

Rural communities especially women are not aware of their fundamental rights and the legal provisions available through which they could obtain legal help. Rural women are in need of education because they are also the promoters of the nation. Hence, SWEET organization has organized on legal awareness trainings regularly to the women of Self Help Groups and youth groups. Experts like advocates and social activists have been invited for these trainings. Legal provision topics such as the right to live, the right to health, the right to education and the right to employment for every citizen were included in the discussions. The trainings have also the way to learn the outline of the structure and function of the Police and Judicial systems.

Water & Sanitation

Trainings and orientations on water and sanitation have been organized for the women, children and youth. Since our district is becoming a drought area due to the water scarcity problem, the importance of on the management of water recourses and usage of water in need based have been taught during the awareness programs. The trainings also included on the need of drinking of boiled water towards avoiding the spread of water borne deceases. These sessions are very useful for the young students to change their attitude in WASH concept. In 2012 – 2013, SWEET has constructed one Bore well cum Drinking water overhead tank in Veedur Government School in Villupuram District. This project has been supported by The Prem Rawat Foundation (TPRF, USA) and through this project 1500 students and public are benefitting. Previously, in the year 2005-2006, the Stitching Derde Weeld Groep Soest, THE NEDERLANDS supported this project for the vocational training center run by SWEET. The soest helped us with construction of toilet and water tank for SWEET training centre.

Health

HIV / AIDS & TB Interventions

India is becoming the third country in the world with the highest population of people living with HIV/AIDS. Hence the Tamilnadu state is being one of the states has a very high prevalence rate of HIV, we chose to conduct awareness trainings and intervention programs to educate the women of Self-Help Groups, youth, young women and Female Sex workers. During last year there were 12 awareness programs have been organized in which 365 were benefited. Dr. TJ. Jaishankar, MD, Professior in JIPMER Hospital, Pondochery and Dr. Amalraj MS, St.Mary’s Eye Hospital, Pondichery and Mrs. Sagayamary conducted the trainings. Inputs on the following topics such as reproductive health, sexually transmitted infections and self hygiene, spread of HIV / AIDS were dealt. The trainers highlighted that women and youth should take initiative in disseminating awareness among the public and to eradicate the stigma that prevails within in the communities. SWEET have motivated and involved the youth and women in awareness campaigns initiated also by the other organizations working for the prevention of HIV / AIDS. SWEET is also working for the eradication of Tuberculosis among the rural communities through education of scientific facts and preventative aspects. 10 awareness education programs were conducted for the benefit of women, youth and students.

Eye surgery (Cataract Surgery for Senior Citizen)

Since cataract is an upcoming health issues among the rural people of our working villages, SWEET take this intervention with a priority based. At least 3 awareness programs on eye care with cataract surgery have been organized by SWEET every year. Through these camps awareness education on eye care and the dangers of self medication on the same has been imparted. Most of the senior citizens and young people also got benefitted through these camps. The camps have been organized with the support of Government and Private Trust hospitals. A team consists of doctors, eye specialists and health care providers conducted these camps. The local leaders and civic members have helped our organization in conducting these camps. Totally, 12850 were screened and provided medicines and 765 people got benefitted with surgery, spectacles and medicines. These camps also conducted in schools and more than 3565 students benefitted.

Dental camps for school children

In association with Government hospitals and private trust hospitals dental awareness camps were conducted in the Government and aided schools. A team of dentists conducted the camp with orientations on the responsibilities of students in taking care of their dental health. Through these camps more than 11560 students have benefitted.

Environmental Awareness & Tree Plantation Program

SWEET has initiated this project with the support of NEAC Program through Government of Forest Department and Chennai, the CP Ramasamy Iyar Foundation. Through this project we created knowledge on the need of safe environment and tree plantation among school children, women SHGs and youth groups. Yearly we are organizing 3 awareness generation programs in which hand bills and posters will be distributed. Till date 5000 tree saplings have been planted in public places, schools road side through 1500 trained members.

Awareness Campaigns

Rallies and street theatre programs have been organized for the promotion of awareness on eye donation, blood donation and donating organs. During these campaigns, pamphlets and door slips were distributed and wall writings were displayed.

Social Welfare

Food, clothes and medical assistance provided to senior citizens and destitute widows. Till now 325 people benefited People above 60 years were given assistance, medical support and clothes for the needy.

Animal Welfare

SWEET also collaborated with Government Veterinary Hospitals and organized 22 medical camps for cattle like cow, bullocks, goats, hen and cats. The camps helped very much to vaccinations, fertilization and to treat other deceases. Through this project more than 3000 families benefited.
